Technology, Theory and Design

Introduction

From the quality of both curriculum and participants at Surround 2002, it was immediately apparent that the annual gathering, like the technology it represents, has finally come of age for the Pro Audio community. Now in its fourth year, the Conference no longer needed to spend time on justifying the need for multi-channel audio. Throughout the two full days of formal presentations and master classes, the emphasis was on sharing strategies, tips and techniques for multi-channel recording, mixing, and mastering. The questions no longer revolved around whether to do surround, but how to do it well.

We’ve come a long way in a very short time,” observed United Entertainment Media’s Margaret Sekelsky one of the original founders of the Conference (seen here with SMR Group's Philip Brandes). “When we first started it, we had no idea where we were going with it – we just knew that it was important.” As associate publisher of UEM publications Surround Professional and ProSurround News, Sekelsky has been involved in organizing the event each year, and said she’s gratified by its growth in attendance and prestige. “Because we were the first, we’ve been able to establish ourselves as the premier information resource event for the exploding surround field.” Click for a Larger Image
Expressing similar satisfaction with the evolution of the Conference was Surround Professional founding editor Tomlinson Holman, who’s been virtually synonymous with multi-channel audio since his days at the helm of LucasFilm THX. Pointing to the increasingly clarified focus of the event, Holman said, “In past years, we’ve been all over the map trying to find our audience – we had sessions on games, you name it. This year, most of the sessions are about surround and music. That’s appropriate, because music is where the biggest growth is.” [] Click for a Larger Image
